According to a systematic review and meta-analysis published online December 27, 2017 in JAMA Surgery, surgeons and medical interventionalists are at high risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, degenerative spine disease, thoracic outlet syndrome, and tension neck syndrome similar to construction workers. The study highlights that while the issues of burnout and emotional well-being are addressed often, the physical demands of medicine should also be considered important.
